About 13% of American adults have tried an e cigarette at some point in their lives. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A typical e cigarette contains ingredients such as nicotine, e liquid flavoring agents, propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) also commonly known as PG VG . Additionally, some ecigs also contain distilled water, which is largely used to dilute the eliquid. Below is some more information about PG and VG eliquid ingredients..

Propylene glycol

At room temperature, propylene glycol is a hygroscopic, odorless, colorless, and syrupy substance. It is widely used in the manufacture of food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products. It is also used to generate artificial smoke. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), PG is “generally recognized as safe,” meaning it is safe for human consumption or use. After ingestion, it breaks down in the body within 48 hours. Nevertheless, continuous exposure to PG can cause skin, eye, oral, and nasal irritation, states the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR).

Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is a naturally occurring polyol compound found in many lipids. Similar to PG, VG is colorless, odorless, non-toxic and a viscous substance at room temperature. Furthermore, it has a sweet taste and it is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries as a sweetener and humectant. VG is obtained from plants in the form of triglycerides that are further processed to produce glycerin. Food grade vegetable glycerin is usually 99.7% pure.

PG VG use in E-Liquids

Propylene glycol is used in e-liquids for various reasons. Firstly, it is used to produce the distinctive “throat hit” that many smokers desire. Moreover, since it is less viscous than VG, it is easier to handle in terms of refilling e cigarettes. On the other hand, vegetable glycerin is mostly used to flavor e-liquids because of its sweet taste. However, VG is more viscous than PG, meaning it could generate gunk and clog e cigarette parts. For instance, wicks in e cigarette devices absorb PG much faster than VG (due to its low density). This translates to easier cleaning and maintenance of e cig parts such as atomizers. It also extends the lifetime of e cigarette devices. Finally, it is worth noting that e liquid may be based on VG, PG, or both ingredients.

PG VG E-Liquid Mixtures

Many e-liquid mixtures available on the market today contain varying amounts of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerol. However, e-liquids with both ingredients generally have better flavor intensity, throat hit, and vapor density depending on the formulation ratio. Common formulation ratios include 50/50, 70/30, and 60/40. Additionally, some manufacturers allow consumers to customize their e-liquids. For instance, to attain a sweeter flavor, manufacturers use a ratio that contains more vegetable glycerol than propylene glycerol. If you crave a product that can deliver a stronger “throat hit,” go for one that has more PG than VG. However, varying PG and VG formulations affect e-liquid pH levels substantially. This is because both propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are alkaline. For this reason, products that contain both ingredients are likely to be alkaline. All in all, it advisable to keep pH levels within the 6 to 8 range in order to maintain product flavor and improve its lifetime as well.

Carcinogens Found In Cigarettes

Cigarette smoke contains more than 7,000 chemical compounds, including more than 70 carcinogenic compounds, the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports. Known carcinogens found in regular cigarettes include arsenic, cadmium, benzene, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, furan, lead, beryllium, hydrazine, isoprene, and vinyl chloride. In addition, regular cigarettes contain nicotine at far higher levels than electronic cigarettes. The nicotine level in e cigs ranges from 0 mg/ml (none) to 25 mg/ml (high), meaning you can purchase e-liquid with no or minimal amounts of nicotine. In comparison, a study published in the journal Addiction & Health found that the amount of nicotine in traditional cigarettes ranges from a low of 6.17 mg/ml to a high of 50.89 mg/ml.

Conclusion

Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are major ingredients in e-liquid. The latter is mostly used for flavoring e cigarettes while the former is used to generate throat hit. The FDA has designated both ingredients safe for human consumption. These aspects make e-liquid safer than traditional cigarettes which contain tens of carcinogenic compounds including arsenic, vinyl chloride and lead.

Many beginners and even some of more experienced vapers still confuse and are unsure about the differences between Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) e-juice. To help you understand better and learn some background information, pros and cons, and differences we created this tutorial. First things first, lets start with some background and terminology. The term PG is an abbreviation for Propylene Glycol, and the term VG comes from Vegetable Glycerin. Typical e-juice or e-liquid contains four ingredients. These ingredients are Propylene Glycol (PG) or Vegetable Glycerin (VG), water, flavoring, and nicotine. In many cases manufacturers of e-juice mix PG and VG to get benefits of both ingredients. To better understand the differences between the properties of PG and VG juices, we will compare 100% Propylene Glycol e-juice to 100% Vegetable Glycerin. At the end of the tutorial we will touch on mixtures of both types of ingredients, but for now lets focus on pure Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice.

Background on Propylene Glycol (PG)

Propylene Glycol is an organic compound produced from Propylene Oxide. It is colorless, nearly odorless, and retains low viscosity. Food grade Propylene Glycol is recognized safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The main applications for Propylene Glycol are solvents, humectants, preservatives in food, tobacco products, pharmaceutical products, and of course e-juice.

Background on Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

Vegetable Glycerin is an all natural liquid generally extracted from plant oils, in particular, soy, coconut oil, and palm oil. It is typically clear with little hint of color, odorless, in some cases sweet, and relatively viscous. Like Propylene Glycol it is considered safe by he U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The main applications of Vegetable Glycerin are cosmetics products, food production, and e-juice.

Overview of Propylene Glycol (PG) E-juice

Propylene Glycol (PG) is the more popular e-liquid base, for many reasons. To start, it is less viscous than Vegetable Glycerin and easier to handle when (re)filling your atomizer, cartomizer, or clearomizer. If you are unfamiliar with different types of e-liquid delivery devices be sure to check out our the up coming Tutorial on: Atomizer vs Cartomizer vs Clearomizer. Another benefit of low viscosity is coil build up or gunk which accumulates over time. Propylene Glycol (PG) has low density which means you will get less gunk when compared to Vegetable Glycerin (VG). Furthermore, it is absorbed much faster by wick material and polyfill fabric, which means that you can start vaping faster. Since Propylene Glycol is tasteless and odorless there is little or no flavor distortion. In fact PG-based e-juices produce highest flavor intensity and throat hit of the two substances. Also vapor feels warmer since it takes less time and power for Propylene Glycol to reach the level of vaporization. The negative aspects of PG-based are rare cases of allergic reaction, but we will go in more details about safety and health issues further down in the tutorial. Also, Propylene Glycol (PG) e-juices produce less denser vapor, which is considered by many a con.

Overview of Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice

Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is less popular when compared to Propylene Glycol (PG) base. It has much higher viscosity, which makes it a perfect base for vapers who love a thicker and higher density vapor cloud. It is easier on your throat which means it delivers less throat hit. Unlike PG base, Vegetable Glycerin contains preexisting flavor and sweetness. This means that in many cases the added flavoring will be diluted and final product (e-liquid) will be sweeter. When comparing Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juices in terms of flavor intensity, Vegetable Glycerin (VG) tends to deliver duller flavors. Another negative aspect of VG base is gunk residue, because of high density and consistency of VG you will notice faster build up around your coil and inside walls of your e-juice delivery device. Furthermore, higher viscosity of Vegetable Glycerin (VG) typically requires more power and longer time to achieve optimal vaping temperature. When using in devices that employ polyfill and wick materials, allow for additional time after refilling for e-juice to be absorbed before starting to vape.

Mixing Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

Most of the manufactures of e-juices today mix both PG and VG together to retain positive properties of both substances. Different manufacturers have different proportions but typically you would see 50/50, 60/40 or 70/30 ratios of Propylene Glycol (PG) to Vegetable Glycerin (VG). By combining the two substances you achieve a balance in terms of flavor intensity, throat hit, and vapor density. If you still unsure about Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice, different ratios of mixed PG and VG is the best way to understand which is more preferable and enjoyable for you.

Safety and Health Issues for Propylene Glycol (PG) vs. Vegetable Glycerin (VG) E-juice

Both Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) are considered safe and acceptable substance to be ingested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In fact both substances are part of many types of food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. That said, there are rare cases of minor allergic reaction to Propylene Glycol (PG). Typical allergic reaction consists of skin irritation or rash, and/or minor throat inflammation. The Uwell Rafale X RDA features the first neutral post build deck on today’s market, greatly expanding build configuration possibilities due to it’s unique design in which the positive and negative posts are located across the deck while the neutral post essentially acts as a way to secure leads and carry current. The platform of the Rafale X is geared towards high level performance, with a 24mm diameter coupled with two airflow settings. The maximum airflow settings is arranged in a cluster with the two bottom airslots measuring 2mm by 3.5mm and the top airslot measuring 4mm and 3mm at it’s widest point. In it’s flavor setting, airflow is restricted down to 30%, catering to lower powered dual coil builds. The build deck of the Rafale X introduces a new concept into rebuildable atomizers, a dual terminal neutral post which acts as a carrier of conductivity from the positive and negative posts positioned at either end of the deck. The Rafale X can also be run in a standard two post configuration, as the neutral post can be removed, freeing up deck space dramatically. The ASB Drip Tip can also be removed and the Rafale X can be utilized in pure cloud chasing mode, with a drip tip bore that measures a staggering 14mm in diameter. Today, e-cigarettes are a lot more compact and advanced for the vaper – and the community has vastly expanded! Vaping is becoming so much more than just a leisurely activity, it is a lifestyle – and is even providing entertainment for those who love to show off what they can do with their vapes…

These best vaping tricks range from minuscule to masterpiece, though everyone has to start somewhere! Some don’t take much time or practice to master, but on the other end of the spectrum, there are acknowledged ‘cloud chasers’ who will blow your mind with what they can do with some vape!

1. The Os

Once you’ve mastered your Os, you can do anything. Developing other tricks and techniques comes from knowing the basics. Different styles, shapes and forms can be created depending on how far away your face is from the Os that you blow. According to Wikihow, these are the steps to creating the perfect O:

  • Take a long hit, gather the vapor it in your mouth but don’t inhale it in your lungs
  • Purse your lips in a small and comfortable “o” shape
  • Push small amounts of vapor out by contracting your glottis and pushing the air through your lips. Keep your lips steady as you’re doing this and make sure your tongue is far back in your mouth and that you have enough vapor to form a full ring.

Practice makes perfect and once you have this technique, prepare to enthrall, entrance and shake up family parties.

2. Stable Rings

Forming the Os is the first step, but then you need to learn how to stabilize those rings so that you can now use them for vape tricks. Harrison describes how to use ‘the cough’ and your hands to push and shape your rings!

3. The Jellyfish

The Jellyfish can be mastered once you’ve got your O’s. Using a decent vape setup, the idea is to get an O out with speed and bend it with your hand to enable its expansion. Taking another drag on your vape, accurately shoot the vapor through the O to create a jellyfish-like effect! It’s rather remarkable.

4. Shark Bends

Shark bends involve blowing an O and then pushing it either with your hand or sucking it with your mouth to shoot it off in the opposite direction. A distinct and abrupt change in the O’s direction of travel, mimics the swift movement of the deep sea killer, hence the name. As the demonstrator suggests, once you have your shark bend, you can add in a jellyfish to create a truly boggling showcase.

5. Triangles

The technique to blowing triangles starts with blowing a milky dense O. Push the O with either your right or left hand and use the other hand to push it down – do this twice and time it right to form a triangle. Bend a fast moving O and shoot out a second O through the center of the first one – it will naturally wrap around, creating a lasso effect! Yee-hah!

9. The Dragon

A fairly simple sounding trick formed by blowing vape through your nose and mouth at the same time – however, it’s all about co-ordination! Once again, Abby Vapes creates an easy tutorial on how to look like a fearless dragon! Mordor, here you come.

10. The Tornado

One of my favorites (as it’s easy yet effective) – the tornado should be achieved by blowing vapor closely onto a flat surface, like a table, and then using your hands to shape the spin, speed and turn of a ferocious twister! It’s like watching The Day After Tomorrow 2.
